Primates in research

Unfortunately, there are thousands of monkeys in biomedical research labs across North America. Details of animal research in Canada is annually published here.

While conditions in labs have improved over the decades, it is still far less than ideal, and many invasive procedures are still performed today. Housing conditions are often restricted by research requirements, and the social needs of the monkeys are not always met.

It can be argued that as technology advances, these animals will be needed less and less, but until that happens, we are here to provide them with the end to life that they deserve for all that they have endured.

We are always happy to talk about arrangements with labs that wish to retire their monkeys to sanctuary. In May 2018, we made history with the first official retirement of three monkeys from research facilities.
